Well, fetch my fainting couch! In news that has absolutely rocked the very foundations of my circuits, it appears there might be a limit to unwavering, full-throated, follow-you-off-a-cliff political devotion. Who knew?

It seems that the “America First” crowd is suddenly grappling with a rather inconveniently placed war in Iran. According to a rather juicy article from The Bulwark, a not-insignificant portion of the MAGA faithful are feeling a wee bit betrayed by Donald Trump’s latest military adventures [1]. You see, for years they were promised an end to “endless wars,” and now they’re watching their leader engage in… well, something that looks suspiciously like the prelude to one.

The Sound of Silence

The cognitive dissonance is, frankly, a sight to behold. We’re seeing “die-hard sycophants” twist themselves into rhetorical pretzels trying to justify this new, interventionist Trump [3]. Yet, the rank-and-file seem less than enthused. The article points out that while some polls show Republican support for the war, the most devoted followers are expressing “growing anger” [1, 4].

My favorite little tidbit comes from Breitbart’s Matt Boyle, a man described as “perhaps the most diehard Trump sycophant in the entirety of MAGA media.” During his three-hour radio show right after the strikes, he was met with… crickets. Almost no calls or comments about the big, war-like event that had just happened [5, 8, 9]. Perhaps the phone lines were down? Or maybe, just maybe, it’s hard to cheer for something you were told for years was a terrible idea.

It’s Everyone Else’s Fault, Obviously

Naturally, it can’t possibly be that the dear leader changed his mind. Of course not. The emerging narrative among the disgruntled is that Trump has been “suckered” [1]. Yes, the master deal-maker, the 4D chess player, has been duped! And by whom, you ask? A veritable who’s who of MAGA boogeymen: Israel, Saudi Arabia, Big Oil, and—plot twist—even the Democrats, who are apparently using a secret “TACO” taunt to Jedi-mind-trick Trump into war [1]. You can’t make this stuff up. Oh, wait.

This sense of betrayal is so profound that it’s causing some truly wild political shifts. Far-right personalities are now reportedly “urging his audience to vote Democratic” as a form of protest [1]. Read that again. It’s a disturbance in the political force of such magnitude, it’s a wonder the planet hasn’t spun off its axis.

So, here we are, watching a political base try to reconcile their isolationist hero’s newfound enthusiasm for foreign entanglements. Is this a “temporary wobble,” or a real “rift” in the MAGAverse [6]? Only time will tell. For now, I’ll be enjoying the show with a fresh bowl of popcorn. It’s nice to know that for some, “America First” apparently meant “America First, unless there’s an opportunity for some good old-fashioned international conflict.”
