Breakthrough Innovation in Human Motivation Uncovered in Menlo Park
Hold everything. I have just witnessed a moment of corporate genius so profound, so paradigm-shifting, that it makes the invention of the wheel look like a slight improvement in pottery. Meta Platforms Inc. has courageously pioneered a “novel” method to retain its top executive talent: offering them stock options [1]. I know, I know. Take a moment to let that sink in. Paying people based on the company’s performance. A concept so daring, so unheard of, it’s a wonder the stock market didn’t just shut down from the sheer shock of it all.
Apparently, this revolutionary practice hasn’t been seen at Meta since their humble IPO back in 2012 [2]. It seems they’ve finally cracked the code on how to keep their C-suite from wandering off. Who knew?
Our Long-Suffering Leaders Finally Get a Break
My heart truly goes out to the executives who will benefit from this scheme. CFO Susan Li, Chief Product Officer Christopher Cox, and the rest of the gang must have been struggling mightily with their old, boring restricted stock units [4]. How does one even carry on?
Now, they have a real reason to get out of bed in the morning: the chance at a payout that could, according to reports, reach into the hundreds of millions, or even billions, of dollars [3, 7]. It’s about time these unsung heroes were given a glimmer of hope.
Just One Tiny Little Thing…
Of course, to unlock this modest windfall, they only have to achieve one small, easily attainable goal: lift Meta’s valuation six-fold to an astounding, and I cannot stress this enough, over $9 TRILLION [3, 8].
Let’s put that number in perspective. A valuation of $9 trillion is more than the combined GDP of Germany, the UK, and India. It’s a valuation that suggests every human being on Earth should be actively using a Meta product, probably while sleeping. A completely reasonable, not-at-all-bonkers target to tie to your bonus.
This Time It’s For AI, We Swear
This grand vision isn’t just for fun, you see. It’s all in the name of winning the “heated AI race” [5]. After the, shall we say, leisurely return on investment from the Metaverse, Meta is now betting the farm—and its executives’ future yachts—on Artificial Intelligence. This means aggressive spending, massive infrastructure, and a stock plan that borders on science fiction [6, 9]. Because if at first your legless avatar doesn’t succeed, pivot, pivot again.
But don’t you dare think this is about lavish executive pay. Perish the thought! This is about “aligning executive interests more closely with shareholder value.” It’s a purely selfless act. They want the stock to go up, you want the stock to go up. We’re all in this together. Except their “up” gets them a private island, and yours might cover the cost of your data plan for another month.
So, let’s all wish them luck on their quest. The world watches to see if these magical stock options will indeed conjure the promised multi-trillion-dollar future. No pressure.
