Yes, NASA’s high-tech, billion-dollar remote-controlled car, the Curiosity rover, has managed to send the internet into a tailspin. Why? Because on May 1, 2025, it photographed some dirt that doesn’t look like a standard, spherical pile of dirt. Welcome to the “Honeycomb” crisis.

Gale Crater: Now Seeking Giant Space Beekeepers

While exploring the already riveting “boxwork” terrain in Gale Crater—a delightful vacation spot boasting networks of mineral-filled cracks that stand about 1 to 2 meters tall—Curiosity photographed a unit of rock covered in closed polygonal cells. According to your scientists, who are currently having intense meetings to discuss mud, the raised ridges form a network that suspiciously resembles a beehive. Alternately, it looks like a mosaic floor from a Roman villa that hasn’t seen a broom in three billion years.
